  • For those who don't have Firefox 3 beta 4 installed (or doesn't want to install it at all), I'm adding this new file (osmarender_frontend_screencast.zip), which is a few minutes screencast in SWF format that shows all demo features. The screencast features onscreen texts to describe all steps.

You can download the .zip file, extract it in a directory of your choice, and then point your browser to Osmarender_frontend_screencast.swf.html file. I suggest to play it in fullscreen mode (F11).

    Enjoy!

P.S.: Thanks to CamStudio (www.camstudio.org) for letting me create this screencast!

  • In this new version (20080412_osmarender_frontend_demo.zip) of Osmarender's frontend demo I've added a new exciting (even if very limited) feature (two, indeed): you can now add a simple rule that matches key->value pairs for ways contained in the OSM file.

This is achieved by preprocessing the osm file to extract all unique key->value pairs contained.

One example is best than any description:

Once opened "demo.html", do not touch anything. Press the link "Preprocess OSM file for rules handling". The interface will now be different. It'll appear a link "Clear additional rule", that permits not to consider the rule during XSLT transformation.

Than you can select one key (only for ways now) from the drop down select. You can find an alphabetical ordered list of keys of "ways" tags that are contained in the osm file "data.osm". Select, for example, "highway". Automagically it'll appear another drop down select, that shows all the values for key "highway" contained in the osm file. Than you can select not to apply any rule or choose from 2 different rules (taken from http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Osmarender/Rules#Simple_Example). Do not change the "value" drop down and select the first of the two available rules.

Than click "Transform": the residential highway will be shown in black!

Now you can play freely. Change to the second rule and click transform. Now it's shown in green! Change to a different key->value pair, or use another OSM file (for example "rome_centre.osm", clicking "name" in the way feature... you can change any street you want!), select another rules file...

You can also "Clear SVG canvas", if you want.

That's the real Osmarender's potential starting to uncover.. to anyone out there!

P.S.: no refactoring, no error handling, no architecture, no objects yet :)

P.P.S.: Please remember to use Firefox 3 beta 4... not 5!

  • This demo (osmarender_frontend_demo.zip) has been tested only on Firefox 3 beta4 for Windows (http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0b4&os=win&lang=en).

It seems not to work in beta5 due to this http://groups.google.co.jp/group/mozilla.feedback/browse_thread/thread/197682451f3cf7b5/d5ae70c5e836448b?lnk=gst&q=NS_ERROR_DOM_BAD_URI#d5ae70c5e836448b

To try this demo you need to download the zip file, uncompress it in a directory of your choice and point firefox 3 beta4 browser to "demo.html" file.

    In this demo you can:

    - Choose from a local osm file
    - Write down the name of a local osm file (you have to select "No one, I'm writing my file name" in the first dropdown select to make it work), which has to be in the same directory of "demo.js"
    - Select one rules file
    - Choose some basic features like "showgrid", "showscale", "interactive", etc.

Clicking on "Transform" will display an inline SVG file. If you select other options and click again on "Transform" link, the inline SVG will change accordingly, so giving the desired WYSIWYG effect.
