"War does notdetermine who is right-only who is left."
I think that this quote is trying to say that war is nottrying to determine that one side is right and one side is wrong. The peoplewho are still alive in the end show that they had the official right to winthis war. This compares to the book ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ during thetimes in which Paul is battling with the Russians. I agree with this quote. Ithink that whoever is left standing gets to prove their point and win the war.I think that whoever is left standing has shown that they have not given up fortheir goal and that they don’t plan on giving up until they win! They haverisked their lives to battle this war out and they are willing to fight forwhat they want.

“Men were made for war. Without it they wandered greyly about, getting under the feet of the women, who were trying to organize the reallyimportant things of life.” – Alice Thomas Ellis
This means that the only purpose men have in their lives is war.If they are not warring, they are doing nothing. The only thing they do isbother the women who are trying to do everything important. This relates to AllQuiet On the Western Front because there are only men fighting in the war. Allthe women stay at home. In fact, most of the young men enlisted, but onlybecause they were pressured in to it. I don’t agree with it, however. In thistime, anyone, man or woman can enlist in the army. We are not pressured in tojoining the army either. Men also have many other occupations other than beingin the army, and war is not the only they are good at. Women and Men are a lotmore equal now. And men do not get in the way of women, and women are not theonly ones trying to anything important. That part of the quote is not evenshown in All Quiet.

This Quote signifies how important war is and how importantit is to be a soldier. It also explains how much goes into war and what ittakes to make all of it possible to be able to make it all possible. It alsogives detail on he conditions that the soldiers usually have to face which arenever really good. This links to All Quiet because it is just letting us knowwhat their every situation is like being where they are. I agree with thisquote because everything it says it actually what war is like and what it saysmakes perfect sense.

“A great war leaves the country with three armies-an army ofcripples, an army of mourners, and an army of thieves.” – German Proverb
This quote is saying that after a great war, there are threemain groups. There are those thatare left crippled from the war. Also are those who mourn the loved ones that they have lost.
I agree with this statement. Those who return from the fighting are often left scarred, whether mentally or physically. They could have lost a limb to an explosive. They may have a gash that never healed. Many come back and have to live withthe very traumatic things that they have seen and done. The guilt that they could not savetheir friend. Things they cannever undo or get rid of. Thereare the people who lost a loved one and will forever remember the war thatstole them away. And then thereare the fighters that do not know how to give up the fight. They return and begin to fight the societythat they once served.
In All Quiet, the armies are being assembled. The fighting leaves peoplecrippled. Some live, but some likeKemmerich die before they can get back. This creates the second army. An army of grief stricken family. Then those who are resourceful like Kat may return and have nothing tocome back to. With only fightingknowledge, they become criminals.

I think the quote “Sometimes I think it should be a rule ofwar that you have to see somebody up close and get to know him before you canshoot him”, means that before you kill someone in war you should really get toknow the person they are. Because do you know how their life is? If reallykilling them is going to benefit you and ruin their life. Like what if theyhave a family back home, or they’re billionaires. But you wouldn’t know sinceyou’re there just to end their life to keep yours going, and you don’t care howimportant they are or their life is. In the book All Quiet on the WesternFront this quote relates to the scene wherePaul is about to throw a grenade at someone, but he hesitates to do it. Hefeels that it is not the right thing to do, he feels that this man has donenothing wrong and it is wrong to end his life for the mans innocents. Do Iagree with this? It depends. On normal standards, yes, but in war no. Since thequote and the book is based on the war, I do not agree with it. I do not agreewith it because in war you are there to stand up for your country, not theother person’s. You are there to care for your life and watch your back, nottheirs. But when it comes to just being in society I do not think anyone hasthe right to just shoot someone, whether you know them or not. People die ontheir own; you don’t do it for them. But in war you do. You protect yourcountry the best you can, and the best way you can is to make the other men’slife unprotected.

Men were made for war. Without it they wandered greyly about, getting under the feet of the women, who were trying to organize the really important things of life. -Alice Thomas Ellis
This quote means that basically, men are war crazed freaks and women are the only ones that know what they're doing. They keep fighting in wars and when they don't have any to fight, they don't know what to do with themselves and the women are the only ones that know what to do. This has to do with all quiet, because paul is someone who doesn't know anything but war. He lives war. He breathes war. Every day is full of war for him. If he didn't have war, he wouldn't know what to do with himself. I'm not sure whether or not I agree with this because, on one hand, I've never been in war and I get along just fine. Paul on the other hand, if the war ended he would have a really hard time adjusting to a regular job while women his age would not. So I don't think I'm qualified to have an opinion on this because I have no experience with it.

"Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity ofatrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about himand goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. Heis the only animal that for sordid wages will march out... and help toslaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whomhe has no quarrel.... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes theblood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man"- with his mouth."
--Mark TwainWhat this quote means is that humankind is the only speciesthat will take himself and other people and go forward to purposefully killother humans. He is saying that no other kind of animals will take others withthem to go and hurt someone of the same species in which there is no dispute. For example lions are not going to randomly attack other lions just becausethere is some quarrel between the two heads of the lion tribes.
This relates to All Quiet on the Western Front because inthe book Paul goes to throw a grenade at the French soldiers but then stops topause. He pauses because he finally sees that soldier as an actual human beinginstead of some just random enemy.
I agree with this quote because it has a lot of truth behindit. Man is the only species that will, on purpose, kill someone that has donenothing wrong to them directly.

“ I couldn’t help but sayto (mr gorbachev), just think how easy his task and mine might be in thesemeetings that we held if suddenly there was a threat to this world from anotherplanet. We would find out once and for all that we really are all human beingshere on this earth together. “ Ronald Reagan
Ithink this quote means that he is saying they are all humans and they shouldnot be fighting against each other. It is saying if someone from another planetattacked we should fight but since everyone is human, the same species weshould not be fighting each other. This is saying that humans are sodisconnected from each other and we would need aliens to attack us to realizewere all in life together. This relates to the book because Paul was going tothrow a granite at a French soldier but than he looked into his eyes andrealized he shouldn’t. He realized that the French soldier is just a human likehim and he decided to not throw the granite at him. I agree with this quotebecause we are all humans and we should not fight with each other we should allwork together to keep everyone safe and make living for us better. Instead weare fighting with each other to gain more power when really we are all humansand should become more connected with on another. I think this is a really goodquote because it is saying we are so absorbed in power and fighting we wouldneed aliens to attack us to get us to realized we should stop the fightingbecause were all the same. Overall I liked this quote

“Sometimes I think itshould be a rule of war that you have to see somebody up close and get to knowhim before you can shoot him.” –M*A*S*H, Colonel Potter
This quote means that killing someone in war shouldn’t be excused just because it’s war. In this sense, you can’t just shoot someone because they’re in your way or because they’re a danger to you—a shot in war is the same as a shot on the street and it’s not fair to kill an innocent man in either setting. In All Quiet, Paul was hesitant to throw the grenade at his opponent because he realized that he wasn’t necessarily “a bad guy,” and in fact he had no idea who he was. I agree with this quote, that thinking about who is going to be killed in war before you kill them is the right thing to do, morally. However, I also disagree, because in war, all of the soldiers are there for the same reason, to fight for their country. When they prepare for war, they have to know they could die. That’s why killing in war is acceptable, and that’s why it’s not necessary to think about what you do before you do it, in this case.

“Sometimes I thinkit should be a rule of war that you have to see somebody up close to get toknow him before you can shoot him.”
Ithink what this quote is trying to tell people is that war isn’t something thatshould be encouraged. Shooting random people isn’t that hard, but when you getto know the person its a lot harder because your killing a friend. In thisquote it states that it should be a rule of war that you must know the personwho would make war almost impossible and half of the people in the war wouldnot be able to continue. This is connected to AQ because Paul has a problemwith shooting an opponent. He hesitate before following through with hisdecision because for a split second he thought they are the same people, justfighting for their country and he, like Paul, might have a family and a lifeback at home. I agree with thisquote in some ways, and disagree in others. This quote is almost saying thatwar is a bad thing, which it is. But then in ways im for war because it hasseemed to make things work out with countries before, although it is a gruesomeevent. When you know the person, you cant shoot them therefore war cannothappen except for those few people who have no trouble shooting whoever. I wishthe world could go on without war, and I think well I hope that eventually itwill get to that but who knows. For now, we just have to accept that fact thatwar is a part of our world and we have to deal with it the way it is.

Ithink this quote by Mark Twain is explaining how man is the only creature onthis earth that gathers together a huge army to fight against his own kind. Idon’t totally believe that because there are plenty of bugs that do that andalso other animals, but none do it to our extent. When someone attacks acountry or when they have opposing viewpoints, they send the inhabitants oftheir country off to fight for them. Unlike other animals, our fights arealmost never personal, but rather political. This quote relates to a part in AllQuiet on the Western Front where Paul wasabout to throw a grenade at an incoming soldier, when he realized that that manwas the same as him. He stopped and thought about why he was fightingand killing the French, because the soldiers that were trying to kill him werein the same situation he was. He thought about the bigger picture. I agree withall this quote is saying, but I also believe that war is sometimes necessaryand a part of human nature. Some wars we should’ve kept out noses out of, butothers – like the American Revolution and Civil War – were necessary tobuilding up the society and freedom we have today.

War Quotes and All Quiet
Thisquote means that man kind is the only species that sells their killing servicesto slightly better their own standing. Mark Twain hints at the fact that we as a species are so shallow as tomaybe even sell our friendship with our closest companions for a couple bucks. Then he goes on to say that when we arenot slaughtering our own kind, we are attempting to forget about what we havedone, and are preaching that everyone should unite into one body and supporteach other.
Thisquote applies to All Quiet very well. Very few, if any, of these men had a desire to go to war for theircountry. However, after theirteacher preached his ideals to them in class, they had been convinced to helpkill their fellow humans for less money than they would have been able to makeoutside of the war.
Ithink this quote is quite true for the most part. The idea of this quote is true, but the fact that ants fightbetween themselves when the workers don’t know the reason either proves that weare not the only species.

It means we should get know people in the war cause what if they are really nice guys and have children. Instead of just killing people for your country. And if you know the person and he wasn’t really a nice guy you wouldn’t feel so bad about killing the guy. And you would’t be so dramatized after the war cause you were just killing mean people. That’s why he thinks you should get to know the person first. And I to totally agree with it cause if you got to know them and they were being really mean, there is kinda of reason to kill him. Its not cool kill people you don’t know just for no reason. I think that would a really great rule. Cause you don’t wont to be dramatized after the war. If that was a rule there would be less people dramatized and ready for the next war and a lot more people will live out of it. But to bad that rule would never happen

Quote Response
“War does not determine who is right-only who is left.” –Bertrand Russell
This quote basically means the fact having the biggest armyor the best technology doesn’t determine whom the true winner of a dispute. Whilein fact that war only shows who has the most brute force, and not who is rightor wrong. You could go even further with this quote and actually say that theybelieve that war is a waste of time, and that there is no need for it in oursociety. I think this quote kind of relates to the soldiers in All Quiet onthe Western Front, because they are alwayscomplaining about the war, and wishing that they weren’t there. So theyactually feel that there is absolutely no need for it. The fact is that whenPaul looked into the Russian soldiers eyes when they become their prisoners, hecan’t believe that they are his enemy. That they are no different from him, andhe starts to feel that there is no point for this war because we are all thesame on the inside. I feel that war can serve its purpose but that it has tostop at some point. The fact is, if there is extreme injustice happening in acountry, that we should do something about it, and sadly war is the only way toreally get things to change. Yet, we still have to know when to get involvedand when to just leave it alone.

“Sometimes I think it should be a rule of war that youhave to see somebody up close and get to know him before you can shoot him” M*A*S*H~ Colonel Potter.
I think that this quote means that everyone is a person, hasa life outside the war and we are just like one another in some way and justkilling this familiar stranger would be wrong. It is also dying by the hands ofa stranger; wouldn’t you want to die by someone you know rather than by astranger (Even though we wouldn’t want to die at all).
This relates to “All Quiet On the Western Front” because inchapter 8, Paul was watching over the Russian Prisoners and he could see themin a different light. They were just like him, fighting for the safety of theirown country. Paul was being nice to them (or as nice as a guard can be toprisoners). He gave them cigarettes and some of his own food, all the whileobserving the broken-spirited men that was the Russian captives.
I agree with the quote because war is pointless. People arejust people no matter what race, gender, religion, etc.. they are.

Quote from Dwight d. Eisenhower
This quote is trying to show how guns are not necessary andhow it takes away from other people who are suffering from other reasons.“Every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hungerand are not fed”, this quote signifies that there is so much money spent intothe war and guns and artillery when there are people starving and don’t havehouse and the money isn’t going towards that. It doesn’t mean that firing theguns and launching warships is taking away from the hungry but that in a sensethere is money in the guns and warships that could be used for many othersituations to help people. In all quiet there is a part when they talk abouthow they thing the German and English are more well fed and how it makes themmore powerful. This relates to the quote because they sort of realize whatshappening on their side and how they aren’t getting as much food in the war andif they weren’t in the war or using al the guns this wouldn’t be a problem.

A great war leaves the country with three armies – an armyof cripples, an army of mourners, and an army of thieves.
This quote means that the warchanges you. Not only does it change your way of thinking but it also altersyour memory and makes you numb. You see people dying every day. Cant get closeto people because you know that there is a high chance that he will die. Peoplea lot of times have to have their leg or arm amputated, leaving an actual partof them in the war. The war makes you do stupid things because you know thereis a chance that you will die every day. They think that if you might die thenext day why not live life to the fullest. So they smoke pot do drugs andsteel.
Kropp and his companions know notto get close to any of the new recruits because 80% of them will die becausethey don’t have that much experience on the field. When they go close to one ofthe new recruits they fond him soon later with shells in him and he died soonafter. One of the recruits went back home because he was on leave and when hewent home he did not know how to talk to his family, or how to respond to hismoms sickness. He was numb from the war.
I agree with it once people are inthe war they get tired and die and when some survive they get their legs, orarms amputated.

Making of Guns with money instead of helping the poor.
To take the money away and use it to make a gun instead ofusing money to help the poor is not the answer. The money is not helping thepoor, it should not be used to make guns and should be used on the humansociety and try to keep humanity moving forward and not loosing it. They shouldnot just make money to use guns and forget about the other, no wealthier sideof humanity. Thus, it should start to look at our self’s and not just makeweapons for war, but to help other people.
This relates to All Quiet when the Germans notice that theother side is more well fed than them, and have more people, probably due tonot using much money on the guns, but helping people and food so they canfight.
I kinda agree with this. Yes, you should have well fedpeople so they can fight and all, but you should keep on making guns and evolutionizingnew weapons so that the people aren’t being let down to something that theythought would protect them.

I think this quote is explainingthe solider point of view on the war. He is talking about how they are allhuman beings in the war. He talks about how easy tasks they have when theirjobs really are to kill and not get killed. Ending other humans lives is a jobthat makes you think once in a while and that’s what Mr. Gorbachev wasthinking. This links to when Paul stabbed an enemy. When he stabbed him hethought that the person he stabbed was just a normal human being. Maybe theycould be friends if they weren’t trained to kill each other. I agree with thequote because if killing was never their job, they probably would’ve beenfriends. Not all people were born for war, and those exact people are the onesthat think hard. They do not think killing is the right way but it’s the jobthat they were given. I also think war isn’t the right answer for anything.Taking another persons life does not prove anything. Life would be easier ifeveryone was all united and helped each other. I believe the world can do betterthan war. So yes I do agree.

Quote
This quote “ Sometime I think it should be a rule of war that you have to seesomebody up closer and get to know him before you can shoot him.” By M*A*S*H,Colonel Potter. I think this quote means that sometimes you shouldn’t have aright to kill someone if you don’t know the person. Which I strongly disagreebecause what’s the point of knowing them when your eventually going to killthem. The whole point of war is to kill your enemy so why even get to know himbefore you can shoot him. Like in the book “ All Quiet in the western front” byErich Maria Remarque Paul experienced seeing a French soldier in a dugout. Hewas chilling in the hole and out of nowhere, a French soldier jumps in. Paulreacted and think quickly, taking out his knife and shank the soldier a coupletimes. Then he lays there and think about what he just did and feels horrible. The more he gets to know the enemy, the more he felt bad. He feels like thisguy will haunt him forever because Paul knows a lot about him already. TheFrench soldier has a family, and a home just like Paul. He realize their bothsimilar and there pretty much killing each other for nothing. So I believe thatthis quote is a horrible idea, and I strongly disagree with it because there’sno point at all. Seeing the person up close and then killing him is useless.

Ronald Reagan Quote 1985
I think that the quote means that everyone is human and thatwe are not that different at all. On the outside all of us are different butinside we are completely the same. Something that relates to this quote in allquiet on the western front is when Paul stabs the French soldier. When theFrench soldier jumped into the hole where Paul was in it was his instinct toattack him right away. Afterwards Paul noticed that him and the French soldierweren’t that different at all. Paul tried to comfort the soldier and hebandaged him up. He said something along the lines like if it were not forthese two different colored uniforms that they might be brothers and not fighteach other. I agree with the quote and what it means because if there was peaceand everyone bonded together life would be much easier. Life would be easierbecause there would be no conflict or hunger because everyone would help eachother out. It would show how everyone on this earth is equal to one another andthat everyone that lives here is human.

This quote relates to all quiet inthe western front because the book shows how this is true. In the book, whenpeople die such there is no reason and it shows how horrific it would reallybe. There is no reason that people die because neither side makes any realheadway. Both sides are still at about the same place as before and neither oneare gaining anything from the war. When people die in All Quiet they dieknowing that there death is pointless because all the men feel that the waritself is pointless. It isn’t sweet, when Paul visits his dead friends motherand she sobs over her dead son. It isn’t sweet when they have to hearexplosions while they sleep and see rats gnawing on the dead in the morning. Itisn’t sweet to see coffins lined up before a battle ready for the aftermath. The men accept death as a possibility and maybe even a inevitability. There isno reason and it isn’t heroic to die from getting shot in the back whilerunning away. The men know that there country doesn’t care who died and fightinga war that they don’t agree with is pointless. I agree with this quote becausethe men who die in war have not started the war and they shouldn’t have to diejust because there country was ignorant enough to start up a war.

Men were made for war. Without it they wandered greylyabout, getting under the feet of the women, who were trying to organize thereally important things of life. ~AliceThomas Ellis
Thisquote is pretty much saying that men are only good for war. Without war, theirheads would just be in the clouds, not knowing what to do or what’s going on.It also says that they would get in the way of women, who are actually doingsomething with their lives. This connects to All Quiet because there are nowomen in the book that are fighting in the war. If you were a guy then youpretty much had to join the army if you wanted to become a man and if youdidn’t, then you would just be out of place basically. I think that this iswrong though because in this time, anyone can join the army and if you were aguy that wasn’t in the war, your not though of any less than if you were in thewar. And without men not in the war there would pretty much be no houses orbuildings, I’m not saying women can’t, I’m just saying that not enough will ofdo manual labor such as construction and such. So I think that this is a badquote.

The spending money on guns quote.
Every time that a weapon is made or a new ship is made, wespend millions if not billions of dollars. This money could be spent on feedingsomeone that is in need, or putting a blanket on a cold man that would other wisefreeze during a cold, rainy night. The time that is put into improving theseweapons, or designing one that can kill that much better, could be spentdesigning a shelter for the poor, or a kitchen to make food for the hungry.Though every country in the world would rather put their time in to finding away to kill people better, or make the enemies that much more intimidated tocome into their land, rather than help the ones that live with in their landthat need the help. “This is not a way of life at all in any rue sense” saysthat we are not living a life that we should. We have distorted what lifeshould really be like, caring for others and helping who needs help, andreplaced it with intimidation, anger and greed. Just like AQ, the countries are trying to find ways to make them the victors in world war I

“They wrote in the old days that it is sweet and fitting todie for one’s country. But in modern war there is nothing sweet nor fitting inyour dying. You will die like a dog for no good reason.” – Ernest Hemingway
I think this quotemeans that in the good old days believed it was an honor and privilege to giveyour life fighting for your country. The death rate in earlier wars were wayhigher than today so they had to convince them that it was an honorable thingto die for your country. Then in the quote it says that in today’s wars dyingis a bitter thing that nobody wants. People think it’s a sign of weakness todie in today’s wars, and grief is given instead of honor and respect. When the quotesays “You will die like a dog for no good reason” because people join the armyfor life experiences and stability, and end up going to war over somethingunclear and getting shot like you were an animal. Today war is an escape fromhome life and not something of honor. Wars are over ridiculous things and thatis what Ernest is saying that back in the day it was respectful to die buttoday people frown upon it.
