Finally the release date of the upcoming Alien invasion sci-fi for The Netherlands has been released by Sony Pictures.
Date's been set for October 8th..am happy about this even tho American citizens can already watch it as of August 13th!
It's much better than having to wait 6 months longer than US citizens to finally be able to watch Crank 2 in Dutch theatres :(

  • Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

Recently i decided to go watch this at my local theatre despite my spidey sense tingling like mad.
I have only 1 conclusion: Michael Bay hasn't learned anything from the mistakes he made in the 1st Transformers film :(
    <rant>
This 2nd film is 1 huge pile of shit, so chaotic and doesn't have any form of coherency.. a feat even the 1st film didn't fail on so much.
Despite the awesome action shots it's sad to learn this film has grossed over $200 million in the opening weekend in the US alone :(
Your hard earned cash is better spent on films that actually are worth watching like The Hurtlocker for instance.
My advice: stay the hell away from watching this in theatres and rent it on netflix or thru some other means.
Kudos to Michael Bay for bringing such a wonderful film to audiences world wide</rant>

  • The Incredible Hulk review [Blu-ray]

After Ang Lee's 2003 comic-book to film adaptation attempt this time around it was Louis Leterrier's shot of bringing 1 of the largest characters from the Marvel universe to the big screen and WOW did he so ever succeed!

    Tech Specs:
    BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc

    The Film:
Whereas Ang Lee's Hulk did have the over the top Hulk behavior like jumping large parts of canyons, which I really dug btw, the story of his adaptation attempt, and the way the Hulk actually looked on screen, left much to be desired IMHO.
The story in Louis Leterrier's (of which I knew nothing before watching his adaptation) film was much better and being really true to the original TV series of the 80's.
There is a scene where you see Bruce Banner (played very well and humbly by Edward Norton as similar as Bill Bixby in the original TV series) sitting like a homeless person in the streets of a city and you hear the theme song playing from the original TV series.
Another example is the way the camera focuses on Norton's face when his heart rate reaches 200 beats per minute and turns into the Hulk.
Norton's face is dead in the center of the screen, all other scenery around him being put in a very dark background and you get to see his eyes turning green which is the start of his transformation into the Hulk.
The way the Hulk looks in this adaptation is really lifelike which brings in lots of realism which I've found to help alot in making me as the viewer really believe and care for the Hulk.

    The Video:
The Incredible Hulk is presented in 2:35:1 widescreen and is MPEG4 AVC encoded.
Like Transformers (see review below) the video is reference grade material.
Deep blacks, beautiful lush greens during the chapter 6 campus scene and lots and lots of detail will have the viewer have nothing but respect for the very high picture quality.

    The Audio:
The Incredible Hulk on Blu-ray comes with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio losless track which, like the video, is reference grade material.
The soundstage is immersed with a beautiful natural flow of heavy bass, musical score and agressive directional effects and it all delivers it effortlessly leaving the viewer holding his/her breath during the several scenes where the Hulk makes his appearance.

I found this film to be so much better on all fronts than Ang Lee's 2003 attempt.
A nice detail is that The Incredible Hulk comes in a green-colored Blu-ray case :)
The Incredible Hulk is a must-have in anyone's Blu-ray collection and comes highly recommended.

  • Transformers review [Blu-ray]

I'm from the Transformers generation and when I learned about Michael Bay bringing Transformers to the big screen I was pretty sceptic.
I watched this film at the theatre and at the time was pretty disappointed and disgusted with Bay's choices to not stay true to the appearance of my favorite Transformers like Megatron but especially Starscream.
This time around I was able to watch this film with a diffrent approach and it really helped me in being able to enjoy this film for what it is: a Michael Bay Hollywood popcorn flick.

    Tech Specs:
    BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc

    The Film:
Like I just stated, being able to use a diffrent approach for my 2nd watching of this film really helped.
Transformers is most definitely not an awesome film where story is concerned, however it delivers in what it sets out to do: blow the audience minds with its awesome special effects!
Everytime either an Autobot or Decepticon goes thru its transformation sequence you're just being blown away with the awesomeness of it all.

    The Video:
The film is presented in 2:40:1 widescreen and is MPEG-4 AVC encoded.
The picture quality is top notch reference material exceeding even the most die hard of fans' expectations.
From beginning till the end of this film the picture simply leaves you with nothing but wows due to the exceptional color, detail and clarity.
This really comes into its own during the high paced fight scenes with the viewer being able to actually follow what is going on instead of having to stare at a high speed fuzzy blur!

    The Audio:
Transformers on Blu-ray comes with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack which really delivers.
From the moment the Paramount stars fly by in the opening sequence using very nice directional sounds you know you are in for quite a listening treat.
The LFE channel gets a very good workout but never gets too loud so that the listener has to turn down the volume.
The surround speakers are being used very agressivly but with exceptional timing producing a very lifelike sound stage.

I highly recommend Blu-ray owners to have a go at watching this film and even pick up their own copy, if only for just being able to showcase the awesomeness of this flick to their friends.

  • Black Hawk Down review [Blu-ray]

I recently ordered Black Hawk Down thru Amazon and last night it got deliverd (together with The Dark Knight and the 5-disc Complete Collector's Edition of another truly awesome Ridley Scott film.. Blade Runner) and i made time to watch it.

    Tech Specs:
    BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc

    The Film:
Black Hawk Down without a doubt is one of Ridley Scott's best productions, based on an actual story.

    The Video:
The film is presented in 2.40:1 widescreen and was MPEG-2 encoded.
The video quality was better than i expected far surpassing the transfer of the Superbit DVD with a very high level of detail.

    The Audio:
For you out there who dont know this.. Black Hawk Down won the Academy Award for Best Sound so i was very excited to see if the Blu-ray version could live up to the movie's reputation.
Having owned the Superbit DVD edition containing the awesome DTS 5.1 soundtrack which was released in 2001 this Blu-ray title had alot to live up to and i can tell you it does not disappoint :)
The uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround track on this disc easily holds its ground against all previous released versions of this film being very loud and agressive.
Excellent dynamic range and a perfect channel balance creates a very lifelike soundfield.

  • Underworld review [Blu-ray]

Underworld is 1 of those gems which i've loved from the very 1st time i watched it and very recently i finally got to experience it on Blu-ray.

    Tech Specs:
    BD-25 Single-Layer Disc

    The Video:
Like Hellboy, Underworld also was encoded using the MPEG-4 AVC and it produces a very moody picture making use of good black levels, even too much at times since many scenes in the film are very dark to begin with.
Even with these "short comings" i feel the picture is as good as you are gonna experience it on any platform for some time to come.

    The Audio:
On the audio side of things, i can pleasantly say the uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround mix (48 kHz/16-Bit/4.6 Mbps) is really agressive making excellent use of the LFE channel and yet it's producing very natural channel movement with great clarity to dialogue.
When compared to the previous DVD editions this Blu-ray is truly a huge upgrade for fans of the film.

  • Hellboy review [Blu-ray]

Here's a Blu-ray film i have been very excited about watching ever since reading the very positive review it got on blu-ray.com
This is one of the very best films i've seen on Blu-ray yet.

    Tech Specs:
    BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc

    The Video:
It's picture quality is brilliant thanks to the MPEG-4 AVC encoding producing, unlike the DVD version, pretty much the best color accuracy you will find.

    The Audio:
On the audio front the uncompressed 5.1 PCM track really delivers it's goods with really good use of the LFE channel.
This is a film each movie buff should have in its collection.

  • Wall-E review [Blu-ray]

Just finished watching this frickin' awesome movie on Blu-ray.
The quality films Pixar is dishing out never seizes to amaze me.. with Wall-E they raised the animation bar so high, i think it will take some time to be improved upon.

    Tech Specs:
    BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc

    The Video:
Wall-E prolly has THE best transfer and definitly belongs in the 'demo reference' category.
It's simply the best way of showcasing what high-def is supposed to be all about.

    The Audio:
The 6.1 DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack ((48kHz/24-bit) the cover actually incorrectly lists it as being a 5.1 track) is very immersive and really well balanced.
If you own a Blu-ray player, do yourself a favor and pickup a copy of this awesome film.

  • November 19th: The new Xbox experience (nxe) is here

Yesterday saw the launch of the new nxe (a.k.a. Xbox 360's new dashboard) w00t :)
While at work yesterday i told myself i'd prolly go home, launch it, make use of the new 'install game to harddrive' feature and then be done with it and start gaming but how wrong i was lol
I spent more time than i wanna admit in customizing my avatar.. tell me what you think how i look ;P
I cracked myself up when i found out by accident that you can make yur avatar actually burp by pressing RS :)
I like the new feature where you can throw yourself or someone else a party, meaning nothing but an easy way to invite your friends into chats, share pictures and more.
I'd say fire the new nxe up yourself and let me know what you think of it

Im playing Gears Of War (GoW) on Xbox 360 and am totally loving it even tho the single player game can be quite frustrating at times when yur squad members are too clumsy to follow yur squad commands (like regroup, take a defensive or agressive stance).
But I recently watched the GoW 2 trailer as shown at E3 and wow.. my jaw simply dropped on the floor.. what an awesome piece of footage that was!

  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Yesterday i've downloaded the playable demo of this latest game of the Star Wars saga on the Xbox 360 and wow .. i can tell you it sure delivers!
The controls were a bit getting used to and even at the very end of the demo I still wasnt totally comfy with them but Im convinced with enough practise this game will be even more awesome.
So apart from the controls the gameplay and the graphics I found it to be just awesome.
In Star Warstfu (heh stfu) you play the role of Darth Vader's apprentice and the game is whay you call a 3rd person shooter.
The way you can use the dark side of the Force to grab all sorts of things .. objects but also people is so awesome to see and to use .. picking up your opponents and smashing them into each other or into walls just gives you that spine tingling feeling which is hard to describe until you get to feel it yourself :)
The graphics are really mind blowing.. when using your saber but also when you use the lightning as seen being used in the films by the Emperor himself.
The game should be released any day now in Europe and Im sure tempted to buy this one for my Xbox 360.
If papa George himself could only realise this is the type of Star Wars game the die hard fans have been waiting for but failed to make himself.. luckily LucasArts did understand and made the game for us ;)

  • Siny: a simply too cute nutter kitten

This w-end me and my GF Eva visited my parents.
It's been a while since we hooked up, even before my rents went on their 6-week holiday.
When they got back my mom texted me mentioning they brought back a kitten so we were pretty curious how she looked and is.. and oh man I can tell ya.. she's one cute nutter.
My rents don't know her exact age but they're guessing she's about 10 weeks now.
I took plenty of pics of her with my iPhone.. altho that was a pretty tough job with her moving around all the time but I had a helluva fun time doing it :)

This day is just sooo frickin long tho with me starting at 7am to get into work early to beat the traffic jams and having to wait till past 8pm when her flight is expected to touch down .. the wait is frickin killing me but I can only hope my energy will be replenished once I get to hold her in my arms again (and much more ^^)

  • iPhone FW 2.1 RELEASED !!!

I got home very late from work today .. you know how that goes .. you think you're done and about to head out when some colleague needs your help with some "major" problem on a production system :(
Then being stuck in some frickin traffic jam due to the shitty weather taking me like twice as long to get home but once I finally got home and slipped into something more comfy I hooked up my iPhone to my trusty powerbook, fired up iTunes and hit the 'check for update' button and there it was woot :) .. FW 2.1
The upgrade went painless, no errors at all!
1st impressions: the contacts lag is gone .. like really .. GONE :)
The entire UI just feels much more snappy, more responsive .. next was the SMS app .. none of the infamous lag to be found there either :)
Im running on FW 2.1 (5F136) for like an hour now but so far it's been going great so here's hoping things wont get worse.
