1 - Come Together FOR EVERYONE – Beatles – 1969 – ( Abbey Road) Written primarily by John Lennon credited to Lennon/McCartney. The song is the opening track on The Beatles' September 1969 album Abbey Road. One month later it was released as a double A-sided single with "Something", their twenty-first single in the U.K. and twenty-sixth in the U.S.. The song reached the top of the charts in the U.S., and peaked at number four in the U.K.The song's history began with Lennon writing a song for Timothy Leary's failed gubernatorial campaign in California against Ronald Reagan, which promptly ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuanaFor a time, the song was banned by the BBC, as they believed the song's reference to "shoot[ing] Coca-Cola" could be construed as either a cocaine reference or an advertisement of a soft drink.
2 - Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself FOR MIKEY-- Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", released 12/1969, is a 1970 hitsingle recorded by Sly & the Family Stone recognized as one of the greatest and most influential funk songs of all time.
3 - Meet Me Half Way FOR GARY -- Black eyed peas -- 2009 --(The E.N.D.) "Meet Me Halfway" was announced as the third single from the album. The single reached number one in the UK and Australia, making it their third chart topper from The E.N.D. in both countries. It also peaked at seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it the group's third top-10 single from The E.N.D.
4 - Pretty Ballerina FOR RANDY - Lefte Bank -12/1966, charted 1967 - This is 1 of 3 songs thatMichael Brown (pianist)wrote about Renée Fladen, girlfriend of The Left Banke's guitarist Tom Finn and object of Brown's affection. Other songs written about her include the band's biggest hit "Walk Away Renée" and "She May Call You Up Tonight".
5-We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place FOR WENDY - The Animals - 1965 - In 2004 it was ranked number 233 on Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list; it is also in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.
6 - There's A Moon Out Tonight FOR LARRY - The Capris - 1958 - In July 1960 (almost two years after The Capris originally recorded "There's a Moon Out Tonight") Nick returned from the army. He received a call from an old girlfriend, who informed him that the song had been playing all over the radio. He and the other group members got wind of their new release. Mike, now driving a bus, came home just in time to get a call from John exclaiming that the record was on a New York radio station. Their song "There's a Moon Out Tonight" ended up in the hands of Murray the K at WINS. He had a show called “Rate the Record”. On the show there five records going up against each other, one of them being, “There’s a Moon Out Tonight” by The Capris. The Capris won one night and came in second to “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” which was a major hit by The Shirelles. The Capris had all quit their jobs and reunited. A week later they were at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, then at the Brooklyn Paramount, The Regal in Roanoke, Virginia. They were all over the place and were on the rise. No one believed the song could be a hit on Lost Nite, but when Old Town got involved, the record hit the charts in the first week of 1961, and stayed there for 14 weeks.
7 - Over Under Sideways Down FOR ANDIE - The Yardbirds -1966 - The group is notable for having started the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, all of whom were in the top fifteen of Rolling Stone's 100 Top Guitarists list (Clapton as #4, Page as #9, and Beck as #14). 8 - Stay FOR MICHELLE P.M. - Frankie Valid & The Four Seasons - 1964 - Originally by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs --After taking the demo of "Stay" to Al Silver at Herald Records in New York City, the song was pressed and released in early 1960. "Stay" is the shortest recording ever to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States (1:39).
9 - Love Shack - FOR PEARL - B52s- 1989 -(Cosmic Thing) - The single was the band's biggest hit song and first million-copy seller. It was also the band's first song to reach the Billboard Top 40 charts, peaking at number three. It was named the Best Single of 1989 by Rolling Stone andit was ranked #243 in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2006, it was also named as one of VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s, placing at #40.
10 - The Wind FOR MARILYN – Circus Maximum – 1967 - The band was formed in 1967 by Bob Bruno and Jerry Jeff Walker. Bruno's song "Wind", from their eponymous first album, became a minor hit in the United States, particularly through airplay on "progressive" FM radio stations.
11 – Eve of Destruction FOR MICHAEL Z – Barry McGuire - "Eve of Destruction" is a protest song written by P. F. Sloan in 1965. The accompanying musicians were top-tier LA session men: P.F. Sloan on guitar, Hal Blaine (of Phil Spector's "Wrecking Crew") on drums, and Larry Knechtel on bass. The vocal track was thrown on as a rough mix and was not intended to be the final version, but a copy of the recording "leaked" out to a DJ, who began playing it. The song was an instant hit and as a result the more polished vocal track that was at first envisioned was never recorded. The song had initially been presented to The Byrds as a Dylanesque potential single, but they rejected it. The Turtles, another LA group who often recorded The Byrds' discarded or rejected material, recorded a version instead. Their version was issued as an album track shortly before McGuire's version was cut. It eventually hit number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970.
12 - Egyptian Gardens FOR CLIFF – Kaleidoscope (US) – 1967 - (Side Trips) -- Kaleidoscope (originally The Kaleidoscope) was an American psychedelic folk and ethnic band who recorded 4 albums and several singles for Epic Records between 1966 and 1970. The group was founded on democratic principles – there was no "leader". Side Trips showcased the group’s musical diversity and studio experimentation. Between them, the group played a huge collection of stringed instruments in such early psychedelic songs as " Egyptian Gardens". Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page called them his "favourite band of all time.".
13 – Beck’s Bolera FOR BRUCE – Jeff Beck/Truth 1967 - recorded by Jeff Beck with Jimmy Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass, Nicky Hopkins on piano, and Keith Moon on drums. The song was first released as the b-side of a Jeff Beck solo single on 25 March 1967, and was later on released on the 1968 album Truth. The single charted at Number 14 on the UK charts. "Beck's Bolero" is considered by many critics to be an important work in the early proto development of both the heavy rock and progressive rock genres.
14 – Kashmir FOR ELYSE – Led Zepellin – 1974 - (Physical Graffiti) - Several tracks off the album became live staples at Led Zeppelin concerts including Kashmir, and became regular components of the band's live concert set lists following the release of the album.guitarist Jimmy Page considers this album to be a "high watermark" for Led Zeppelin Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as "the heaviest band of all time" "the biggest band of the '70s" and "unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history”.
15 – Just One Victory FOR SHERI – Todd Rundgren – 1973 – (A Wizard, A True Star) - For many years it was a signature song in Todd Rundgren concerts as well as those of his band Utopia, generally used as the final encore, closing with a long electric guitar solo against a reprise of the cheerleader chorus. In a 2009 interview, Rundgren said, "I have been performing Just One Victory as my encore for years and years. The audience know it's all over after that. No need to ask for more after I have played that.
16 - Sexy Bitch FOR MICHELLE B – 2009 – (One Love) – Sexy Bitch and its clean version "Sexy Chick", is a song recorded by French producer David Guetta. It features guest Senegalese-American R&B vocalist Akon and was released digitally on July 24, 2009 worldwide and later on July 28 in the United States. It is the second single from Guetta's fourth studio album One Love following "When Love Takes Over". The song has been a surprise hit, and has reached the number-one spot on nine different charts so far.
17 – It’s All Over Now FOR ME – Rolling Stones – 1964 – The song was written by Bobby and Shirley Womack. It was first released by The Valentinos featuring Bobby Womack. The Valentinos version entered the Billboard Hot 100 on June 27, 1964, where it stayed on the chart for two weeks. peaking at #94. The Rolling Stones had their first number-one hit with this song in July 1964.
